Hemp Relief Workshop

In its first physical laboratory study, KİK moves past digital representation and puts the idea of “materiality” at the centre.

This workshop examines how hemp, an organic fibre source, is transformed through binders into a structural form and an aesthetic surface — a relief. It was held as part of the artonhemp exhibition.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Hemp Relief Workshop is the first physical laboratory study we have run under KİK Space. We moved past the representations we build with digital tools and placed the material itself — its weight, its resistance, the way it dries — at the centre of the work.

The subject of the workshop was hemp. We tested how this organic fibre source behaves with different binders. As the density of the fibre, the ratio of binder and the drying time change, so do the texture of the surface and the load the form can carry. Together with the participants we altered these variables one by one and compared the results.

What came out of the work were relief surfaces: reliefs that sit between plane and volume and gain depth when the light falls across them from the side. The workshop took place at Barın Han as part of the artonhemp exhibition. The material knowledge we built here also forms the ground for our later installation and production work.
