Hempcity

Part of the ‘The Dreaming Seed Soil to Surface’ exhibition, this installation is a system formed by hemp plaster and a moving light mechanism.

As the light sources change position by means of a mechanical rig, the shadow patterns on the walls change with them. The work is a technical material experiment investigating the potential of hemp as a plaster.

Plastered wire forms work together with the wall surface to set the points at which light breaks, building shifting layers of shadow. Bringing analogue materials together with mechanical systems, the structure makes visible the changing effect of movement on material.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

‘Hempcity’ is a site-specific installation in the ‘The Dreaming Seed Soil to Surface’ exhibition, formed by hemp plaster and a moving light mechanism. The work is conceived as a technical material experiment investigating the potential of hemp as a plaster.

The movement of the light sources by means of a mechanical rig continuously transforms the shadow patterns on the wall surface. The viewer therefore meets a layered visual experience that shifts with the direction of the light, the texture of the surface and the points at which the form breaks.

Plastered wire forms create a system that works together with the wall, making visible both the physical character of the surface and the behaviour of the light. The relationship between the textural quality of hemp plaster and the mechanical movement of light produces a changing condition rather than a fixed object.

Bringing analogue materials together with mechanical systems, “Hempcity” stands out as an experimental installation that makes the effect of movement on material visible and turns shadow into an active component.
